A Clear Ending to a Foggy Demise
Throughout the novel, the reader can see that the others are clearly bullying Piggy as they continue to manipulate him, as if he was some sort of toy. Piggy genuinely tries to make an impact on the others boys, but they do not want to hear his opinion and shut him down. The more Piggy is alienated by Jack and the others, the more he is "silenced" by society and denied his rights of respect from the others, something that can be seen in persecution of gays and Jews. This bullying causes Piggy and the others to be considered outcasts and treated unfairly simply because Jack wanted to have the majority of the power on the island. As bullyonline.org would refer to Jack as a "serial bully" because of his "Jekyll and Hyde nature" which refers to his vicious behavior towards Piggy and his manageable behavior with those that agree with him. This constant bullying also caused others to join the parade of bullying Piggy, such as when, on page 138, the boys are laughing at Piggy's pain from being burnt. When everyone began to laugh at his pain, the boys were laughing to cheer themselves up, but they were not thinking of how they were making Piggy feel, terrible. By being different, Piggy completely lost his voice of opinion as well as any support on the island--Piggy was metaphorically dead on the island. His clear differences from the others made him disliked by Jack as Jack said Piggy did not have the right to be respected by him, simply because he did not fit in with the rest of the boys.
Everyday people are judged upon their physical appearances, personalities, or lifestyles, which causes people like Piggy or homosexuals in our modern society being rejected and alienated from our culture. Because of one person's rude, selfish opinion, which was then broadcasted to many, whole communities of people are shut off from society. No matter what the reason one may have to humiliate and break down certain lifestyles or people, it is not justifiable in any circumstances. Whether bullyonline.org is correct that each bully is an Attention-Seeker, Wannabe, Guru, or Sociopath, it does not matter, the manipulation of other people is not something that any society should accept, nor should any religion condone. One person, or whole bodies of people living the same lifestyle, people were all created equal; therefore, there should be no one who has the ability to proclaim one is greater than another is. If each one of came into this world the same way, from the gathering of a sperm and an egg inside the body of our mothers, it is not logical to place on person below another in society, regardless of economic status, race, religion of sexual preference.
Piggy came onto the island the exact same way all of the other boys did, via a plane crash, besides personal appearance, nothing makes him different from Jack, who also had ideas for the island to prosper. It is depressing to me to see that this is true in society people are prejudged based off of appearance, or personality, but there is no one to blame since virtually everyone is guilty of passing judgment on others. Piggy was persecuted for being overweight, something that somebody at his age cannot necessarily change, nor should that effect how valid his ideas are. The potential that he embodied was extraordinary because even when the others continued to bully him for his feeble-minded ideas, he pushed on and looked for a better time. Many people throughout society believe the misconception, which states being a victim builds character but as APA declares the opposite. Their website states, "Research findings clearly show that being bullied increases the vulnerabilities of bullied children". This is because they are breaking down inside so stress builds up and life becomes pointless. This visibly happens to Piggy at the end of the novel, as he cannot longer take the abuse the other boys are handing him. His metaphorical breaking point is when the rock breaks his glasses. If he can no longer see anything his vision of reality is foggy and clouded, everything becomes bland. His reality becomes so foggy that he cannot see the rock coming towards him, nor does he make any movement to avoid it, thus causing him to be crushed by it. Though it is a sad ending for his character, it is a much more joyous to think that he has finally been free of what had been holding him back the entire time, the bullying.
