Bullying
In today's society, people have to worry about a myriad of different troubles throughout their life, but there has always been one major one throughout all societies, and that is being accepted. Whether it is sexual orientation, weight, race, being mentally ill, or just not conforming to what society is saying, people have always been judged. All people that are bullied are rejected and alienated, and called out in society, whether it is their fault or not. This ridicule can be seen as early as childhood when someone who is a different skin color is left alone on the playground as all the other children with the same skin color play together. It is human nature, since children this age do not purposely attack others, they are innocent, but it is prior knowledge that causes them to act this way. However, bullying should never be tolerated because of the causes that it exemplifies. As stated on the American Psychological Association's (APA) website under bullying, "bullying by peers can have long-term effects on students" which raises the point that one small hostile comment can lead to one person's emotion and physical downfall. The worst part about bullying is that it does not stop in schools, bullying can be seen in the military as the former policy Don't Ask Don't Tell was previously instated, in religion with the anti-homosexual passages, and in history with Jewish concentration camps. The mental stress and negative effects that bullying inflicts on one person is terrible and needs to be ceased.
Religion is meant to be holy, to be sincere and to evoke love, not hatred, as singer Lady Gaga recently said, "There is nothing holy about hatred". As James Kelly, author of the article, "The Bible Condemns Homosexuality, said, "The Bible clearly teaches that homosexual behavior is unnatural and wrong, but the Christian position on homosexuality does not condone the hatred of people who engage in homosexual activity." The Bible goes on to proclaim homosexuality as a sin, but the Bible also goes on to say that, God loves everyone. Everything does not all add up, which causes the hatred and alienation of gays. As the Bible does not condone any hatred towards people since God does love everyone, people should not be persecuting others because they are not doing anything besides loving other people. Being different and standing out from society should not act as a target for alienation, being different should be celebrated.
Along with religion, government also continues to pass judgment amongst people, even in a country like the United States of America, which is labeled as "The Land of the Free". Just as of September 20, 2011, the government repealed the hate-policy known as "Don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) which prohibited all military personnel from asking or telling others about their sexual preferences. Since this country is given the title of "free", people should be able to live freely, without judgment and laws saying you cannot express yourself. Especially if one person is risking their life for one's country, they should be able to fight in a military as they choose, gay, bisexual or straight, out of the closest, or not. This idea has not been confound to the military either, though it is not official, it can be seen in the workplace also. Some have suggested that works ban people from discussing their sexuality so that it does not bring up whether one is homosexual or not. In other words, don't tell anyone about who you love, and we will never question or discriminate against you. Not only is this bullying, but it is appalling to know that a company would force its works to do this. People should be able to live their life in freedom and be able to live their life without any fabrication. When a person cannot live how they truly desire to live, they will ultimately feel the pressure of having to conform to society and begin, mentally, to break down. One way, according to the APA website, one of the best ways to eliminate bullying in the workplace is to improve communication skills, and establish a policy of respect. With respect and proper communication, people should feel more comfortable with their coworkers and not be fearful that someone whom they work with is placing judgment on them simply because they are different.
The effects that the bully causes on his or her victim are very much psychological, thus making it a very tricky situation to be able to understand the root of it, unless you get down to the root of the person. The website bullyonline.org lists a few types of bullies such as "the serial bully", "the attention-seeker" and many more, but, for example, no one really knows why someone like Hitler would do what he did unless they knew him. So how can we figure out how to handle a bully, if we do not even know what are their motives? That is the very question many people try to work out as they are analyzing bullies, but what does it really matter? Someone that is emotionally hitting or physically beating a person is not a friendly person, but a person that does not respect others. Though it is important to know the signs of when somebody is being bullied, the signs of what type of a bully someone is is not vital to stopping the bullying, what is vital is ending the problem, the hatred, the torture. The only thing that is, debatably, arguable is the reason, so that, in the future, the problem cannot exist. For example, Hitler's war crimes were widely known throughout the war, and are still known for being horrifying, so they enacted the Nuremberg Trials, which put anyone who was accused of helping the Nazis on trial. This type of action helped eliminate the problem and show to the world that this kind of hatred would not be tolerated anymore, but why must it stop at something this extreme? When the world has thousands of children crying at night because they are being persecuted for being overweight, why is there not a global war against it? Bullying takes innocent lives, bullying needs to end because too many lives are, but when will this catastrophe end, probably never.
