A Simplified Replica of Government
A plane crash, a deserted island, and a group of adolescent boys are not the first images that come to mind when one thinks of government. However, these are the elements that make up the replicated government in William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies. After finding themselves far from any sign of civilization, the boys attempt to create a structured society similar to the one they grew up in. Not surprisingly, this fails to work; leaders clash against each other, responsibilities are avoided, and structure begins to deteriorate. Though it seems like their desperate situation is unlike anything in the real world, their replicated society is ultimately representative of the failings in modern government.
